The Thanksgiving chats will begin on November 19, 2009 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. ET.

"Glad you're here. I'll be sharing my classroom with you, as well as some tips, resources, reviews and links."
Hey folks. July is winding to a close and so is this blog. I've loved hearing from all you talented and dedicated folks out there. I hope you're all having super summers and if you're picking up extra work this summer, try to relax a bit.
I hope you'll all visit me over on the book section and check out the new book blog there. You'll be able to keep in touch and see what's new in the book world. That should be starting the first week of August. Until then, you've been great. Enjoy this last little bit of Sesame Street magic after the jump.
This is one of my favorite fundraisers. We've ordered seeds from FEDCO for a number of years, packaged them with the help of older students, created the artwork for the envelopes and then sold the seeds with a booklet explaining how they should be grown. It's such a super way for kids to be more involved in the outdoors and in the community.
As written in the FEDCO seed catalog:
A seed store at your school can be a fund-raiser with a wholesome green message. We offer three options: the packet seed store, the bulk seed store and the convenient pre-order seed store. Whichever you choose, we will help you select varieties for resale to parents and school supporters.
In the packet model you purchase multiple packets and re-sell them at a profit. All applicable volume discounts apply plus an additional 10% school seed store packet discount.
The bulk Seed Store is more work, a lot more fun, and offers far greater money-making potential. Schools purchase seeds in bulk and students repack the seed to sell at their own Seed Store. Students design their own seed packets, develop their marketing strategy, and learn practical math using scales and scoops. To keep overhead low we can provide seed envelopes at cost. All applicable volume discounts apply plus an additional 5% school seed store bulk discount.
With the inspiration of Marina Schauffler, the Camden-Rockport PTA last March successfully piloted our third option, modeled after the Girl Scout cookie sale. In the convenient pre-order, we at Fedco put together an order form with 25 popular easy-to-grow varieties and provide enough copies so that all interested school children can circulate them and take orders. We provide the seeds at a healthy discount so that your school group can split the take. Of our three options, this probably involves the least amount of work and certainly the smallest risk, as we ship only what you have already sold. We would love to see this model go national.
We are eager to work with any school, PTA or other interested school organization. Contact CR Lawn by email at seedquality@fedcoseeds.com.
"Why is he blogging about Project Runway?" I can positively see the bubble above your heads, people. Well, E! Online reports, "Eloise in Paris, inspired by the line of children's books written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight," is coming to the big screen and "Project Runway winner Christian Siriano is set to design a collection that will be showcased..." Who would've thought?
And forgetful over-achiever that I am, I found the pics of the calendar cards I made using stickers. We use the calendar at morning meeting throughout the year. The kids have a blast predicting what the new pattern will be at the beginning of the month.

I was beginning to think I'd been whacked by the amnesia stick. After much hunting I found the I Spy pics I had talked about in a previous post. They are of a large chart the kids and I made using photos from scenes we created. Enjoy!
You're going to think I'm a Sesame Street nut but you have to check out these highlights from their upcoming season. It is loaded with celebrities like Feist, Neil Patrick Harris and Brian Williams. Oh and the spoofs look pretty good. How could you not tune in for Preschool Musical, Are You Smarter Than an Egg Layer? or 30 Rocks?
I think it's interesting to see how the UK is including schools when combating global warming. Makes me wonder how US schools are reacting.
LONDON (Reuters) - State schools are to be included under the government's new domestic carbon emissions trading scheme from April 2010, the environment minister said on Wednesday.
Energy use in schools will be measured and count toward the emissions permit quotas of local authorities, which in turn will be encouraged to advise schools on energy efficiency, Hilary Benn said.
"Young people stand to gain most tomorrow from the action we take on climate change today. That's why schools should be included in the shift to a low carbon economy," Benn said in a statement.
Here's a quick tip for you if you're trying to level books. Instead of writing letters on them, try using stickers. So the A's could be apple stickers, B's could be butterflies, C's could be cats, D's could be dinosaurs, ... Have fun with it. That way you know the levels but the kids aren't competing in any way that implies grades or levels.

I've used their stickers to make pattern cards for the monthly calendar. They have a great variety.
