I always feel I have to balance the ever-growing academic curriculum with some fun activities. I mean after all, between reading, writing, math, social studies, and science, shouldn't seven year olds still be cutting and pasting?! I try to incorporate some interesting, fun, and crafty projects with the curriculum I teach so that I cover the content and still allow the students to develop their small motor skills and have some fun. One project that I teach in October is Fact Family Candy Corn. The students use tracers to trace and cut the appropriate size pieces in white, yellow, and orange to form a piece of candy corn. Then they glue them together on a black piece of construction paper. They write three numbers in the three corners and then write the four problems from the fact family below in white crayon. For example, if they use the numbers 3, 4, and 7, below they write: 3+4=7 4+3=7 7-3=4 7-4=3 This allows me to integrate content that we are working on in math with a fun holiday activity. Do you have any suggestions on some seasonal or crafty activities that work well with curriculum?

I find that every minute counts during my school day. I use up every little five or ten minute window I may have with quick reviews or riddles. Therefore, when I teach different subjects, I try to have quick ways to distribute materials and get going on the actual lesson. One thing I have done since I started teaching is use Math Baskets. During math, manipulatives are handed out in almost every lesson. By the time the correct coins, snap cubes, or base ten blocks are handed out to every student, ten minutes of the lesson is gone. I created Math Baskets to help save time. I have one basket for every group of students (or table). In each basket are zip lock bags of different math manipulatives. I have snap cubes, base ten blocks, pattern blocks, counting chips, money, and clocks. These baskets are put together already and always contain the same materials. When the students need to use a certain manipulative, each table captain gets the basket and brings the whole container to their group. They take out the manipulative they need and put it in the middle of the table. Just like that, we are ready to roll! I don't waste time distributing the materials or even getting them ready in the morning. They are always there and can be used as frequently as I need. Please share any time saving ideas you might have. It will help us all out.Message Edited by esaladino on 09-27-2006 10:02 AM

I am so sorry this took so long. Apparently we can't post documents online, only pictures. So I copied the sheet into this message. It is not formatted to look the way it does for me, but at least you can get the idea of the sheet. Enjoy!

As the school year begins, Back-to-School Night usually comes quite quickly. I always feel like there is so much to tell the parents and such a short amount of time to do it! I want to give them information about the classroom, but I don’t want to overwhelm them. I usually spend the time with them talking through the curriculum and some classroom procedures. ... Read More

I'm so excited that you all have such great input on the behavior chart. I really think it works, as long as you are consistent in your practice with it. I will definitely try to post the Think About it Sheet somehow. Currently it is on my school computer and the copies are in the classroom. I probably won't get back there for a week and a half, but I will be sure to look it to posting it. I'd love to hear some of your behavior plans for the school year.
