Hi Guys,

Just a reminder that you are not allowed to use inappropriate language, even if it's written in fan fiction. I've recently needed to edit a few posts that were using language that isn't appropriate for The Stacks, so please be mindful of what you write.

That being said, I love reading all of your Fan Fiction! You guys are amazing writers! So keep up the good work and I look forward to reading more.

Eheheheh... Thanks for the reminder, I haven't posted any fanfiction lately, but in my originial writings my characters can sometimes have a "colorful" vocabularly, so I'll make sure that my mind doesn't slip when I'm posting my new stories!

Alright, Brian! Thanks for the reminder (sometimes I do catch myself ready to... express myself through fanfiction) XD

Oh, so you're our new Moderator! Sorry, I haven't been on in a while, and (no offense intended) usually our mods usernames are something like _moderator_katie_ or something. But, now that I know who you are, nice to meet you! -Maddie

sure thing, Brian!! I probably won't do that, but here's the thing: what if EVERYTHING besides the language is appropriate but a 10 on the confusing meter? How do you make something appropriate but easy for someone else to understand? I mean, come on. Do you want to read something that's appropriate but a 10 on the confusing meter? I don't think so. I know I wouldn't. How do you deal w/ that? Any ideas? I got nada. (btw, nada is Spaish for nothing, zip, zero, zilch, etc.) in case you didn't take Spanish class or whatever.

Hi Technologygirl,

This post was mostly referring to a few stories I had seen that contained words that weren't appropriate for The Stacks. I haven't had an issue with people using inappropriate language on the other Boards, so I just wanted to remind everyone that Fan Fiction still needs to follow the same rules. So I don't think you need to worry about your story becoming too confusing, because I'm sure there is a way to say what you want, without using certain words that are not allowed.

Thanks

@Brian: I know that it's for ppl that DO use that kind of language and all that, but I'm just wondering if ANYONE has any ideas how I can make my story appropriate but not a snoozefest or a 10 on the confusing meter. Can you give some examples on how to do that? I could use some.

Hi Witchunicorn5,

Try to keep questionable language out the story if you can. If you have anything that crosses the line, I'll edit it out and let you know not to use those words again.

Thanks,

Hi Shybird3,

There was only one word that you couldn't use. I can't post the word, but it was the first one on the list. The rest of these words are ok, if you're using them within a story. Obviously, you can't use these words directed at another Stacker or their opinions.

However, there might be a case where I think that someone is using these words in a way that's wrong. If I see someone using language I don't like in fan-fiction or in a way I don't like, I just edit it out and then approve the edited post. I understand there's a blurry line when it comes to writing fan-fiction and the use of some of these words. That's why I'll edit fan-fiction instead of immediately disapproving it.

Thanks,
-Moderator Brian

Brian, are you allowed to use phrases like what the heck, you've got to be kidding, for pete's sake, and other phrases, like, say for instance, for the love of pete? Oh, and I think you are allowed to use the word crud, when you're describing a bad situation like "oh, crud", right? I think so. Also, how are you supposed to make something appropriate but NOT a 10 on the baffling meter? You didn't answer that. I still need examples so I can make something appropriate but not weird.

@technologygirl: I may be able to answer it.

Euphemisms! They are the "nicer" cousins of naughty words. Then sometimes you need euphemisms of euphemisms. For instance, crud would be a second degree euphemism. It stands for one word that isn't necessarily appropriate, and that word stands for an actual swear word.

Another way you can do it is to say simply, "They swore" and you can describe it with like "colorfully" or "vehemently" to make it lesser or greater than simple swearing.

Hope this helps!

~Lauren

Hi Guys,

This is tough because I can't post the words you cannot use, because that would defeat the purpose of telling you not to use them. Some people have asked about certain words relating to the afterlife, where bad people go, (I hope that's clear enough). But I've been editing those words out, so please don't use them.

Also, there is a more harsh word that you can use in the phrase "That sticks." Please don't use that as well, I've been editing that out of posts.

Thanks

theaterchick: that answers the appropriate part but not the baffling part. Do you have any ideas on how to make something appropriate but not WEIRD? I don't.

To make something appropriate, but not weird...um...let's see. What you can try is finding a word that is totally innocuous but a normal word so that they can say that. (For instance, I once used the word 'gall'--meaning nerve--to stand in for OMG and Oh my gosh, because it was different, but still started with the same letter).

So you can try...

Cram instead of crud...things like that. Hopefully that helps.

Basically, the word should have a negative connotation so people know it's being used as an exclamation. So think of negative words (but not words that people use to hurt other people) in the stead of other words. Like...traffic jam, snip (like a wrong snip when it comes to a hair cut), shears, smack, snap, what on earth?, what the hey?, etc., etc.

Hope this helps answer the appropriate question. If not, I'll be back. Sorry this didn't come out in a neatly packaged, short reply. It's kind of complicated.

~Lauren

I wonder if anyone has ideas to make something appropriate, easy to understand, and interesting, since I don't want it to break the boring meter let alone register on it.

@technologygirl: take a look at the first four Harry Potter books. They're kid-friendly, easy to understanding, have virtually no innapropriate language, and are really interesting. Get ideas from there.

hi technologygirl do you SAY curse words? What do you use to substitute them in verbal form, like ah man, or arrghh, or something else. thinking of other words will help get your creative juices flowing, making it less boring in my opinion

@ Technologygirl:
Have you read Percy Jackson? Those are very good examples of how to keep something clean and understandable.

When it comes to writing, Harry Potter isn't the best role model for this board. Tons of violence and, in the later books, cursing. But it adds to the story.

Think about the character or situation. Will curse words improve the story or take away from it? Are you allowed to use the word in question? On this board, the chances are very slim. So, use words you know we're allowed to use.

And think about your character. What is he/she like? Hermione and Ginny are two of my favorite characters in Harry Potter, and they never swore (and if they did, I don't remember because it wasn't as prominent as, say, Ron's language). I think the worst thing Hermione said was "arse".

So maybe it's kinda hard to do this kind of thing basing it off Harry Potter. So, maybe you should find a nice, clean set of books (Percy Jackson, for example, they're relatively clean) to base your language out of.

And, one more thing, like Theaterchik said, euphemisms are great options! Harry Potter euphemisms are even better. Like "What the Hufflepuff?" and "Oh my Gryffindor!"

That was kinda long and rambly, but I hope it helps!

~Brooke, who is too lazy to find her siggy.
