Do you all listen to music when you write? If you do, what kind?

I listen to classic rock... the Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, the Who, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, Lynyrd Skynyrd... bands like that I find inspire me and get me excited to write.

When I write I absolutely have to listen to music. I'm sort of an Indie Rock kinda person. I love Sonic Youth, Death Cab for Cutie, Dead Kennedys and the Ramones and stuff like that. OH but my favorite, favorite band of all time is of course The Beatles (John Lennon exspecially). Rock on! Classical's awesome too. What would you say then? Um...Compose on! (kinda stupid, I know)

I like to listen to the radio on one of those classical stations. I like listening to classical while I write because it doesn't have words to sing along to , so it isn't a distraction from my work. Music only helps if it focuses.

Yeah I agree _iluvjk260_, like I listen to the radio when I write sometimes, but I noticed that if someone talks I can't think, it's like my mind gets muddled, but when I listen to classical or a CD I can think.

Hi Saribo (and all the other music lovers),

This was a great question, and I loved reading all the different responses. (I'm trying to imagine a collaboration between ALL the artists you guys named . . . Sarah McLachlan on piano, Panic! at the Disco singing the chorus, maybe Usher and TaTu could each sing a verse, and The Who could team up with The Beatles for a country-and-western-inspired break while Tchaikovsky conducts everyone . . .)

Actually, I don't usually play music when I'm writing. Possibly because it makes me want to get up and dance or sing along, as a few of you have pointed out. I used to play music when I edited on the boards, but I started to feel guilty because I wasn't giving your posts 100% of my attention (really!) so I stopped . . . if there happens to be music on when I'm writing a script or story, I won't go out of my way to turn it off, but it can be pretty distracting. (Mind you, I typically have music running through my head anyway, whether I'm writing or not!)

Talk to you guys soon,

I mostly listen to Aphex Twin on headphones while writing. Especially my fave Aphex Twin album, "Selected Ambient Works 85-92".

It doesn't distract me that much from the writing, and actually creates a pretty good atmosphere. That album is an awesome experience in itself, but when you start writing listening to it, it just keeps becoming better and better. The definitive 'writing music' album, in my opinion.

Music refreshes and at the same time educates. It lifts one's spirit and relieves after a long strain or even when working on a project, it entertains and keeps me company. I wish I had more time to listen and enjoy music.
