I stare at my paper, which is blank and empty.

Unstained and unwrinkled.

Unscarred and untorn.

Not a leaf or twig to be seen.

I stare at my small piece of paper.

My paper is not very mighty.

Like the tree it once was.

Like what it no longer is.

I lift a pen and write on my paper.

The letters are dark and distinct.

My paper is different.

I stare at the messy sheet before me.

It is smudged with ink and covered in letters.

It is no longer clean and neat.

Like the fresh piece of paper it once was.

Like what it no longer is.

I pick up my sheet and fold a corner.

I crease the edge leaving a line on the sheet.

I fold and I fold the sheet until it is no longer a smudged sheet.

I have made it into a frog that leaps, a kite that flies, and all other things except for what it once was.

It is creased and folded, crumpled and wrinkled.

No longer crisp and stiff.

Like the messy sheet it once was.

Like what it no longer is.

The paper rests in my hand, messy and crumpled.

The wind rips it from my hand.

It drifts away, claimed by the wind.

It is no longer in my sight.

Like what it once was.

Like what it no longer is.

My piece of paper.
