is there a certain length that a memoir has to be? i mean, i'm almost positive that there isn't, but the ones that i read on this site are usually very short. i have a memoir that's over a hundred pages long.

In response to your question, I would agree with you that there is no standard length that a memoir should be. The ones posted on the writing boards here are usually beginnings or fragments of longer pieces. Published memoirs are usually considerably longer. If you have a memoir that's as long as you say it is, I would encourage you to post a small and manageable part of it. I'd be happy to read some of it and give feedback.

Hi Loue,

You're right (and so are Cami and Tanner): memoirs can be considerably longer than most of those posted here. Keep in mind, though, that there is a difference between "a memoir" and someone's "life story" or their autobiography. A memoir usually focuses on one event in someone's life, or possibly a chunk of time out of their lifeline (like the two years that someone spent at a particular school). A thick book that includes many stories from different points in the author's life is properly referred to as their memoirS, so it's really just a bunch of shorter stories --- memoirs --- put into a collection or anthology. So a single memoir, although it could be much longer than those we have posted, would be more realistic for a forum such as this one than a full collection of memoirs, which can be extensive.

I have no idea since usually my memoirs were only a few pages long but the famous adult memoirs are hundreds of pages long. It really varies.

it should just be long enough for you to get out what you want to be read. it's that simple.
