I struggle with the same issue with my three year old, whether or not to put him in preschool this year or just let him wait and have one year (if at all). We spend a lot of time doing things together and apart, we go to the library where he is enrolled in a storytime without me while my daughter and I play outside, or park district classes without me. Together, we do a lot of activities also. We go to dollar bowling days, meet up groups with the church, the park and nature centers. We have "preschool days" together, we pick a subject usually directed by him, and follow up with stories, a craft, and some interenet videos. I love this time, and we have saved so much money. And I can tell you, whenever we are in a group setting he adapts very well with other kids...and never really misbehaves. I visited several preschools, and during my observation noticed kids acting out a lot (which never happens in library classes/crafts). 10 kids, one teacher, it is too be expected. And I have seen my sister struggle with her son picking up bad behavior at preschool. So its hard for me to think he "needs" that enviornment to develop. Boils down to the same old thing, its starts with the parents first.

My three kids are now in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. All three attended preschool. I was a gung-ho mom when my oldest was 3 and signed him up for preschool. He has a summer birthday and we started him in kindergarten after his 5th birthday, so he ended up spending 3 yrs in preschool. Way too long!!! My second child attended 2 years, and my third only 1 year, which I now feel was enough.
At the time I was a stay-at-home mom and spent most of my time playing and caring for my kids. This was also valuable learning for them. By the time they entered preschool they basically knew everything they were going to be taught already, as well as what the kindergarten classes were learning. But the one year of preschool did serve to socialize them more, an important aspect to their development.
If I had to do it over, I would send each child to preschool only 1 year and keep them home with me longer.
