It is my believe that spending quality time reading with our children helps them enormously to be more interested in reading and therefore have more chances of comprehending better.

In my case, I have a 5 year old boy who loves to read. He is currently reading at 3rd grade level according to the "STAR" reading program and comprehends 100% of what he reads. I attribute his success to the time we spend together. He reads at least one 80-100 page chapter book every day, reads some during the day and some in bed and i notice that he enjoys to have an audience. When he finishes the book he takes a quiz online to check his comprehension and i have to say he loves to do that. Plus the points earned in the quizzes allow you to get prizes for your accomplishments...it's cool. Sometimes he reads more complex books and we take turns reading, he reads a paragraph and i read the next and so on.

I find that being involved in what my child does is helping him become a more confident child.

Reading comprehension and fluency go hand in hand.  One program that has worked for many kids I have worked with is listening to a book on tape and reading aloud with it at the same time.  By working with the same book for a short time period the student is able to concentrate more on what they are reading about, instead of just trying to read the words individually.  Plus being able to start and stop the tape by themselves help when they are not sure of a word.

You can do this at home for your child by just making a recording of a book for them.  Start out with books that are easy to read, short in length, and able to be finished in one sitting.  This will help build confidence in your child's reading ability.  Then gradually increase the level of book as they build their vocabulary.  Make sure you are reading in natural phrases and breaks, as well as the punctuation with differences in your voice tone.

I hope it helps!

Dear Parent,

I asked my daughter, who recently graduated and passed to 4th grade. Passing the FCAT was a concern. She says that when she didn't quite get what she was reading she would read slower until she got the jist of what the story was about.

I had spoken with several teachers and attended FCAT parent/teacher conferences. The main focus was getting our children to read more. I started getting my daughter involved in more reading by finding books that she would either identify with or find interesting. We started slow and now she picks out her own books and really enjoys reading. We try to go to our library at least once a week.

My son is going to second grade and with him I have my work cut-out for me. My plan is to do the same as with my daughter. Good Luck.
