With so many students in so many different guided reading group levels, I was having a hard time keeping them organized. I ended up using different colored baskets for each group. In the basket I keep the books for that group level (about four different titles), a three-ring binder with the following items: a couple of generic graphic organizers; a couple of checklists with all of the comprehension and oral reading skills for their level (pre-emergent, emergent, early/developing, transitional or fluent/extending); an anecdotal record sheet for the week; a guided reading group organization sheet with the skills we are working on, the titles of the books we will be reading, and the group members names. I also include any other running record sheets for the titles we will be reading so that I can take a quick record at any given time. I also have a copy of a half sheet of paper to send home with a student that tells the parents that I listened to their child read that day and I mark any skills they did well with or still need to work on. In the basket, I also keep a dry erase board, marker and eraser to work on words, sounds, or anything else that comes up, quickly at the end of the lesson. This system has really helped me stay on top of things and have important information ready when meeting with the classroom teachers, parents or for progress reports.
