The Eye is a Sense Organ. Sense organs receive specific kinds of stimuli with the help of special cells called receptors.
LOCATION OF THE EYE-
The eyes are set within the eye sockets of the skull. Eyebrows and eyelashes are actually protectors of the eye. A tissue called the Adipose tissue in the eye sockets serves as cushioning.
You know what happens when you cry? Everyone's heard of tear glands right? Well, they actually have a really jargon name to them called lachrymal glands and tears actually help to flush out dirt and foreign bodies from the eye! A good side to crying, right?
THE EYEBALL-
The eyeball is nearly spherical and has three layers- sclera (outermost), choroid and retina (innermost).
SCLERA- is opaque except for its front portion which is the cornea. it is thich and tough. It maintains the shape of the eyeball and protects the delicate parts deeper inside.
CHOROID- has network of capillaries that supply blood to the eye. It has a pigmented disk called the Iris which determines the colour of the eye (now I know who to yell at coz my eyes aren't green!) It regulates the amount of light entering the eye.
The pupil allows light to pass to the lens.
RETINA- has two types of light receptors, rods and cones. Roda are sensitive to dim light and cones are sensitive to bright light and various colours. The image of the object is formed on the retina.
DID YOU KNOW- The image formed by the eye on the retina is inverted; our brain perceives the image and makes it 'straight'...otherwise we would be seeing everything upside down...yikes!
